What is a LiFePO4 battery?
LiFePO4 battery (Lithium Iron Phosphate battery) is a type of lithium-ion battery that uses lithium iron phosphate as the cathode material. Compared with traditional ternary lithium batteries, it offers higher safety and much longer cycle life. It is currently one of the safest lithium battery chemistries and is widely used in solar energy storage, RVs, electric boats, and home/commercial energy storage systems.
What are the advantages of LiFePO4 batteries compared to lead-acid batteries?
LiFePO4 batteries are only 1/3 to 1/2 the weight of lead-acid batteries with higher energy density. They offer 2000–6000 cycles (lead-acid typically 300–500 cycles), charging efficiency above 95% (lead-acid ~70-80%), and support 100% depth of discharge without damage. They also have almost no memory effect and require virtually no maintenance, making them the ideal upgrade replacement for lead-acid batteries.
How long is the service life of a LiFePO4 battery?
High-quality LiFePO4 batteries can deliver 3000–6000 cycles (at 80% capacity retention) under proper use. With one charge-discharge cycle per day, they can last 8–15 years or even longer. Actual lifespan also depends on temperature, charge/discharge rate, and the BMS protection system. It is recommended to keep operating temperature between 0–45°C (32–113°F).
Are LiFePO4 batteries safe? Will they explode?
LiFePO4 batteries are widely recognized as the safest lithium battery chemistry. They have excellent thermal stability and are extremely resistant to thermal runaway or combustion even under extreme conditions such as short circuit, overcharge, or physical damage. Compared to ternary lithium batteries, they are much more stable at high temperatures, making them ideal for home energy storage, outdoor power supplies, and other safety-critical applications.
