There are some differences between cylindrical and square lithium iron phosphate batteries (LiFePO₄) in structure, design and application scenarios, which are mainly reflected in the following aspects:

1. Appearance design
• Cylindrical battery:
Cylindrical batteries usually adopt standardized designs, such as the common 18650 (diameter 18mm, height 65mm) or 21700 (diameter 21mm, height 70mm) models. This design has high mechanical strength and stability and is suitable for automated production.
• Square battery:
The appearance of square batteries is more flexible and can be designed into different sizes according to needs. This design is often used for modularization and system integration to optimize space utilization.
2. Capacity and energy density
• Cylindrical battery:
The single cell capacity of cylindrical batteries is usually small, but the total capacity can be increased by parallel or series connection. The energy density is relatively low, but it can be improved by optimizing electrode materials and processes.
• Square battery:
The single cell capacity of square batteries is large, which is suitable for application scenarios with high energy requirements. Due to the more compact design, the energy density is usually higher than that of cylindrical batteries.
3. Heat dissipation performance
• Cylindrical battery:
Cylindrical battery has better heat dissipation performance because its cylindrical structure helps to evenly dissipate heat. At the same time, the outer shell of cylindrical battery is usually made of metal (such as steel or aluminum), which further improves the heat dissipation capacity.
• Prismatic battery:
Prismatic battery has relatively poor heat dissipation performance because its flat design may cause heat to accumulate in local areas. However, the heat dissipation performance of prismatic battery can be improved by optimizing the internal structure and increasing the heat dissipation channel.
4. Manufacturing cost
• Cylindrical battery:
Cylindrical battery has high manufacturing cost because its standardized design requires dedicated production equipment and a complex series or parallel design is required when the number of single cells is large.
• Prismatic battery:
Prismatic battery has low manufacturing cost because its flexible size makes it suitable for mass production and easier to integrate into the system.
5. Application field
• Cylindrical battery:
Cylindrical battery is widely used in consumer electronics (such as laptops, power tools), electric bicycles and some early electric vehicles (such as some models of Tesla Model S).
• Prismatic batteries:
Prismatic batteries are more commonly used in electric vehicles (such as Tesla Model 3, BYD models), energy storage systems (such as home energy storage and grid energy storage), and large industrial equipment.
6. Safety
• Cylindrical batteries:
Cylindrical batteries may release pressure faster due to their shape and packaging materials when thermal runaway occurs, thereby reducing the impact on the entire battery pack.
• Prismatic batteries:
The packaging materials of prismatic batteries are usually aluminum-plastic film or metal shells, and the heat dissipation performance and safety depend on the overall design of the battery pack. If the heat dissipation is not good, prismatic batteries may face a higher risk of thermal runaway.
7. Consistency
• Cylindrical batteries:
Cylindrical batteries have better single-cell consistency because their standardized production makes it easier to ensure consistent performance of each battery.
• Prismatic batteries:
Prismatic batteries may have poor single-cell consistency, especially when the battery size is large, the internal material distribution and performance may vary.
8. Energy density and volume utilization
• Cylindrical battery:
Cylindrical battery has lower volume utilization because its cylindrical design leaves more gaps in the battery pack.
• Prismatic battery:
Prismatic battery has higher volume utilization because its flat design can better fit the space of the battery pack and reduce gaps.
Summary
• Cylindrical battery: suitable for standardized, high-rate discharge, and high heat dissipation requirements, such as consumer electronics and power tools.
• Prismatic battery: suitable for high energy density and high space utilization requirements, such as electric vehicles and energy storage systems.
The choice of which shape of lithium iron phosphate battery to choose depends mainly on the specific application requirements and system design.
